Today we finally launched our pilot test of the next big thing at Mofibo: a personal front page.
Like most other content services we at Mofibo constantly work on two big tasks: making sure that reading or listening is the best experience possible - and probably equally as important: making sure that our readers find that book they didn't know they always wanted to read.
For content recommendation we will continue to spend a lot of energy in editorial recommendations - but as a big part of our strategy going forward we will gradually add more automatically calculated recommendations, and for that part we are now taking it a big step forward. This way we can make a much more personal service - and with more than 10.000 different book titles being read every week we are constantly confirmed in the fact that although some customers obviously read the same books we have a quite long tail of consumption.
Our customers will therefore soon experience a front page with elements such as Books recommended to you because you read 'The Old Man and the Sea' - as well as Books recommended to you because you like Historical Novels - calculated based user profile and the preference genres selected by the customer.
Technically this has been an interesting challenge, going from a Db served front page with high caching for best performance to individual front pages for each customer. For the techies out there we can mention some fancy new technologies - advanced data crunching with SAS, like MapReduce via Google App-Engine, like new AeroSpike NoSQL servers - combined with a lot of well proven technologies like Python, FTP and CSV files (the Ferguson tractor of file formats).
Now Mofibo Pilots (our customer panel) are testing this and pretty soon we will release it to everyone. And in a sense we hope that customers will not notice it - it just feels super natural and even more easy to always find the next good reading experience.

Yesterday we added the possibility to use Mofibo via Windows 8. Besides tablets running Windows 8 (Surface) this also mean that on a regular laptop and PC running Windows 8, one can now install the Mofibo App and read directly on the computer screen. This will not change our strategy that Tablets and Smartphones are our main focus, but we are indeed very curious to see how many PC users we will see as a result of this.
The project has been going on for some months now - and it has resulted in some interesting challenges as the windows environment can result in so many different screen sizes and has to accommodate touch navigation as well as mouse navigation and so on. The result is quite good (if we may say so), so we hope all existing customers will enjoy this new access and new readers to join the club as well.
Maybe now is the time to send Mr. Bill Gates a complimentary subscription - would be good for his Nordic language skills as well !
For more information and download of the app, please proceed to the store here.

With more than a million read pages per day, and readers in all age groups, Mofibo can be a source of many new insights - for example our latest analysis from the data lab focusing on reading speeds and age groups.
Most academic research show that reading speeds of adults is between 250 and 300 words per minute (WPM) - and that we can confirm. Our average reading speed across the whole customer base and across all books is 280 words per minute. Interestingly enough there is a clear pattern related to age peaking at around 40.
What this means is probably up to further (and more qualitative) analysis. That people at 40 have the highest reading skills of all age groups - or that people at 40 are in a rush and people aged 65+ actually spend the time it takes understanding what they read? If research institutions are interested in data for further analysis please let us know.

We at Mofibo are extremely proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with one of the largest publishers in the world:
"Adding Simon & Schuster is a milestone for Mofibo. With their vast catalogue of bestsellers and great authors, we can bring a world of wonderful stories to readers everywhere," says Morten Strunge, the founder of Mofibo.
More than 11.000 new English titles have been moved into our library and are now available for our readers directly on their screens. With a tidal wave of books like this, we will have to work hard in the future to arrange all the titles and make presentations in the next version of our app. But in the meantime we really suggest that you go in and search the library and get inspired.
Of course there are really big names like Stephen King and Dan Brown and many more. But there is so much more.
There are classics, biographies, books on The Second World War, love stories, great novels, crime fiction, young adult and handbooks. Think about the number one more time: 11.000 titles. It’s enough to make you think that there just might be something for everyone.
Maybe this should be our slogan:
Great books for everyone – everywhere.
Many happy, exciting, wise, dreamy, lustful, funny and life fulfilling readings,
